Review: Off The Grid Surplus Jack Knife Shirt And Field Shorts

The Off The Grid Surplus Jack Knife Shirt Is A Jack Of All Trades. The Field Shorts Can Do A Lot Of Things Too.

Jack Knife Shirt

Let's talk about the shirt first. First of all, I am not usually a big fan of wearing collared shirts. I always feel like I am too "dressed up". I pretty much only wear t-shirts. However I still feel pretty casual in the Off The Grid Surplus Jack Knife Shirt. The Jack Knife shirt is also super comfortable. Especially for mountain biking! The shirt fits loose and the material is super breathable and dries very fast! It feels like air is being circulated throughout the shirt with a fan and is also somehow cooling the air as well. There is a vent down the middle of the back as well which helps hot sweaty air move off and away from my body. There is a ton of stretch so movement isn't restricted at all with the Jack Knife shirt. If you want to toss some snacks or need a place to put your glasses the Jack Knife has plenty of pockets and storage. There is a nice big hidden storage pocket on the lower back of the shirt too. You could even toss a beverage in there if you wanted to, although I probably wouldn't want to ride with a can of anything in there. Besides this shirt looks good enough and keeps away the sweat and stink well enough you could just hit the local bar after your ride anyway. The Jack Knife shirt has converted me into wearing a button up shirt while mountain biking. The fit is dialed as well. I am 6'3" tall and weigh 260 lbs or more depending on how many donuts and beers I have been consuming and the XXL fits me perfect. Off The Grid even makes this in a XXXL if you are a really big dude.

Field Shorts

Now let's talk about the shorts. The shorts have a bit narrower fit through the legs. I have the 38 waist and there is a bit of room in the waist but the legs are a bit on the snug side. Not tight but when I go to stand up on the bike they do get caught up a bit on my thighs for a second until they fall down. For reference my thighs are 27" around at the thickest part. So they will probably have a pretty standard fit for average sized legs. One thing these could use is some type of built in belt. When I am hiking or riding bikes wearing a belt is not the most comfortable unless I am wearing a stretch belt like the Arcade. They do have a good amount of stretch so I don't feel like movement is ever constricted. As far as length goes they come just above my knee. This is perfect for trail rides when I am not wearing knee pads but if I were to pair these with knee pads they would be a bit short when seated and I would have just a bit of thigh gap between the shorts and pads. The Field Shorts have a lot of well thought out pockets including a cell phone pocket that keeps the phone out of harms way and free from flopping around. There are two zippered cargo pockets with the rest being open including two hand pockets and a knife pocket / slot. These shorts seem to breathe well enough and I have not produced swamp butt while wearing them yet. Overall these are a great pair of shorts you could go from a job site, to a bike ride and then to the bar or out for some tacos.
