Review: Oveja Negra Snack Pack Top Tube Bike Bag

The Oveja Negra Snack Pack Top Tube Bike Bag Is Perfect For Pretty Much Everything

A good friend of mine let me borrow this bag to check out and I'm stoked that he did. Or maybe I'm not, because now I gotta tell my wife I need just one more thing for biking. And if I get one of these I'll probably need to get a gravel bike to go with it because this would be so good for a long gravel ride. Actually, this little bag would go pretty good on an XC bike, trail bike, all mountain bike, enduro bike, e-bike, hardtail, single speed, etc. So ya, I'm gonna need a few more bikes in the garage too.

Who, What, Where?

Oveja Negra designs, manufactures, and sells top-shelf bikepacking bags out of our fun and bustling factory in Salida, CO. We are 16 people and 20 machines working our tails off to provide the best bags and customer service to our riders worldwide.

Since our start in 2012 we've been manufacturing bikepacking gear in the Upper Arkansas Valley of Colorado.  Born in a 300 square foot hole in the wall shop in the old mining town of Leadville, we've since moved our operation down valley to the river town of Salida.  Every bag that bears our name is manufactured by a small team of dedicated and talented sewers right here in our factory.

When you decide to purchase an Oveja Negra product you are supporting our community. Thanks to you we are able to provide thrive-able careers to people who live and play in our funky little mountain town. We're also committed to supporting other US manufacturers; this helps us limit the environmental impact of the transportation of our raw goods as well as giving us and you the peace of mind that our materials are produced ethically by companies who invest in their communities. Over 90% of our raw materials come from other domestic factories.

Beyond our ethos of domestic manufacturing, quality is king at Oveja Negra.  We are obsessive about the details and keep a close eye on every product.  Our gear is designed, tested, and sewn by cyclists that work hard to insure your adventures go off without a hitch.

What does 'Oveja Negra' mean?

In short, Black Sheep. We love our home in Southern Colorado, and the American West is so heavily influenced by its Spanish roots that we decided the Spanish translation to "Oveja Negra" was a good fit. We embrace being the black sheep of the biking and manufacturing worlds.

Overview

The Oveja Negra Snack Pack Top Tube bike bag is like a mix between an artistic masterpiece and an Army tank. It's a beautiful, well designed bag that looks amazing but also seems to be pretty much near bullet proof. It's clear that Oveja Negra cares about the details and not only do they make rad looking products but also products that will last a lifetime. From the stitching, the zipper, the materials, and even the brand tag, everything is top notch.

What It's Like On The Trail

The Snack Pack attaches to your frame with simple tried and true velcro straps. One strap wraps around just below your stem and then two other strap wrap around your top tube. The flat tob tube of my Ibis Ripmo V3 ended up being a great match with the flat rigid bottom of the Snack Pack. I feel like it added to the stability of the bag. While I am sure this bag was designed with bike packing and much different bikes in mind, it worked flawlessly on my all-mountain / trail bike. Me and my brother in law were headed down to central Utah to do a ride just long enough that it would be wise to bring along some snacks and a headlamp in case we ran out of light. My internal frame storage was already full with my tools, and other miscellaneous items I always have packed, so it was the perfect time to toss on the Snack Pack top tube bag. I tossed in a banana, a bag of peachy rings, a couple protein granola balls, a fruit leather and my headlamp and that just about filled it up. While riding, I never even noticed the bag was their. I thought maybe I would bump into it once in a while, but even pumping, jumping, pushing the bike into corners, and stuff, I never even noticed the bag being there at all. It never moved around at and and stayed super quiet during the entire ride. If I ever needed to access the bag, I could easily get to into it while pedaling and grab what I needed, although I usually just took a break and got snacks as I caught my breath and gave my legs a break. I think my favorite thing about this bag is the placement. Everything is so easily accessible being eight on top of the top tube. I can see this being an amazing bag for some gravel riding and or bike packing. You could grab some gas station food or some fries at McDonald's and stuff them into the Snack Pack. I think you could even stuff a decent sized Beto's breakfast burrito in this thing along with some hot sauce. I tried to think of something I didn't like about this bag but I just don't think there are any flaws with it at all. Well done Oveja Negra. Well done.
